2. Ophelia movie review & film summary (2019) | Roger Ebert
28 jun 2019 · Ophelia is a tragic figure in a tragic play. First loved, then spurned by Hamlet, she goes mad and drowns in the river.
Just as that play catches the conscience of the king, the richness of Shakespeare’s original provides the basis for a vividly imagined adjunct that provides additional insight into the classic and to our own ability to use art to illuminate the modern world.

19 nov 2019 · Upcoming adaptation shines a new light on Shakespeare's famous tragic maiden. Film interview by Owen Richards.
Ophelia is one of Shakespeare's most enduring characters in both literature and art, and yet her part in Hamlet is limited to few lines and fewer motivations. Based on Lisa Klein's novel, the new film Ophelia challenges this interpretation. Daisy Ridley stars as the iconic maiden raising above the petty squabbles of flawed men.

A couple of years later, Danish actress Asta Nielsen played her melancholy countryman, recontextualizing him as a woman. Since then, filmmakers have transposed the Bard's source material into the beer industry, the animal kingdom, and (on several occasions) the corporate boardroom. 11. Ophelia | The New Yorker
22 jul 2019 · The dialogue is in prose, boiled down from Shakespearean verse, and the drama is no longer a tragedy but a fairy tale—almost, at times, a farce.
The director Claire McCarthy is hardly the first person to approach the story of “Hamlet” from an unfamiliar angle. (Tom Stoppard, John Updike, and Ian McEwan are just some of those who have made the attempt.) But McCarthy’s 2018 film, adapted by Semi Chellas from a novel by Lisa Klein that tells the story from Ophelia's perspective, is unusual in devising a whole new set of circumstances with which to thicken the play’s plot. Daisy Ridley plays the title character, who is raised at Elsinore and taken on as a lady-in-waiting by Gertrude (Naomi Watts), before falling for Prince Hamlet (George MacKay), who looks thoroughly tragic, or at least a bit miserable, from the start. The dialogue is in prose, boiled down from Shakespearean verse, and the drama is no longer a tragedy but a fairy tale—almost, at times, a farce. Naomi Watts has a second role, as a woodland witch in charge of all the potions; Clive Owen, as Claudius, steals both the crown and the show.(Streaming on Netflix.)

Claire McCarthy’s Ophelia is the latest in a long line of cinematic Shakespeare adaptations that take the Bard’s words and add a supposedly creative twist. What sets the director’s revisionist take on Hamlet apart from all the others is its hectoring insistence on being different. The film’s opening image finds Daisy Ridley submerged in water, clutching a bouquet of flowers. Her Ophelia is not like any iteration of the character seen before (unless, of course, the viewer has read the 2008 novel by Lisa Klein on which the film is based).
