The district population consisted of 39 farm families, primarily "Pike" Mennonites, located in Brecknock, Earl, East Earl, Ephrata and East Cocalico townships. Some 75 percent of them travel by horse-and-buggy, according to Robert P. Simon, Eastern Lancaster superintendent. In 1966, there were 66 pupils involved. This past year the number had dwindled to 40, and would have totaled only 34 youngsters by September.

Lincoln Independent was created during the administration of President Abraham Lincoln in 1866, and was named in his honor. Its reason for being was transportation. Most of the children cannot speak English when they start school and few go on past the eighth grade. Simon says that it has "the dubios distinction of not having graduated a student from high school for a century." Several went on to Lancaster Mennonite High School each year, however, with the rest working on family farms. Under a 1965 state school district reorganization plan, the small domain would have been split among the Ephrata, Cocalico and Eastern Lancaster districts.

Following litigation which went up to the Commonwealth Court in Harrisburg, Eastern Lancaster was directed to operate the system. Pupils in the other two districts attended on a tuition basis, involving five families in Ephrata Township and four in East Cocalico. Classes were first held in 1867 in a log schoolhouse. A new building was erected in 1912 with a second built in 1957. The "upper school," shown in The Review photo, so-named because it is near the top of the slope of land, housed grades five through eight.

Its teacher was William D. Carpenter, retired head of the mathematics department of Germantown Academy. The lower school, both in location and grades, housed first through fourth grades, taught by Mrs. Carpenter, a former Blue Ball Elementary School teacher who had taught in Lancaster County for 24 years before coming to Lincoln Independent. The couple reportedly will seek other work in September, presumably in schools, while the pupils have been assigned to the Hinkletown Elementary School a few miles away.

It's quite likely that many of them will be enrolled in one of the 27 Mennonite parochial schools located in the Eastern Lancaster County district. It's also quite likely, though not guaranteed, the Lincoln Independent will regain its former independence as the 28th parochial school in the district. Pa. Turnpike Maintenance Man Killed A Pennsylvania Turnpike maintenance worker was killed Tuesday evening of last week by a truck while he was removing flares from the scene of a previous accident.
